Welcome from Headmaster Zachary G. Lehman

Headmaster Zachary G. Lehman
On behalf of the students, teachers, and staff who call The Hill School their home, please accept my warmest welcome. Upon arriving at The Hill in the summer of 2012, my wife, Amy, our three children, and I quickly fell in love with Hill’s people, history, and values. I hope that you will have a similar experience as you explore our very special community or, if you are an alumnus/a or past parent, that you fondly remember your time at “The Family Boarding School.”

When you visit The Hill, you might note that we are a bit traditional. For example, we follow a dress code, our students regularly sit down with faculty members for family-style meals, we gather twice a week at Chapel for thoughtful reflection, many of our students study Latin and Greek, and we pride ourselves on a strict student-written Honor Code and demanding code of conduct. We also enjoy other historic and blossoming traditions such as 126-year-old athletics rivalries, revered a cappella vocal groups, school-wide service projects, community team-building events, and a very special jump in the Dell pond after graduation!

At the same time, we complement Hill’s traditions with an energetic level of innovation. We are evaluating and implementing educational technologies that allow our students to access, synthesize, and manipulate knowledge in new ways: quickly, collaboratively, and creatively. Over the coming years, we will affirm what we already do very well while considering new curricular and co-curricular programs such as leadership training, service learning, environmental education, experiential education, and interdisciplinary studies. We will find improved ways to teach all Hill students 21st century success skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and leading, agility and adaptability, initiative and entrepreneurship, effective oral and written communication, accessing and analyzing data, and curiosity and imagination.

As you will see throughout the website and our publications, I am very passionate about seeing Hill described as both the most traditional and the most innovative secondary school in the country –simultaneously. It definitely is an exciting time at The Hill, as our students, faculty, and staff embrace this vision!

As noted in our Strategic Plan, Hill is working to become “the preeminent family boarding school in the nation.” To accomplish that goal, we are nearing completion of a comprehensive review and re-envisioning of our entire academic and co-curricular program. Moreover, we are turning to our incredibly loyal Hill family to help us enhance our campus, employ the best possible faculty and staff, ensure that a Hill education is affordable to every student, and strengthen the important relationship with our local community of Pottstown.

Without question, The Hill School rewards those who commit to our rigorous expectations with an exceptional educational experience and an extraordinary sense of community, place, purpose, and family. If this combination of academic challenge, co-curricular fulfillment, and lasting friendships appeals to you, I invite you to explore our website, ask questions, get to know our talented faculty, visit our breathtaking campus, and picture yourself as a member of The Hill community.

It’s happening at The Hill. Please come see for yourself.

Warm regards,
